The collection consists of papers, correspondence, and clippings of Governor (and Senator) Joseph Emerson Brown, Governor Joseph MacKay Brown (including his scrapbook), and nineteenth century New York attorney John Burt. In addition there are many manuscript items relating to the Burt family in various Eastern states, the blueprint of Joseph M. Brown's development in Marietta, letters from the noted American artists Washington Allston and Jasper F. Cropsey, newspaper articles, and manuscript and clipped poetry.
